Year 2006-2007 Scholarships
The John R. Mott Scholarship Foundation Year 2006-2007 Scholarship
John R. Mott Born Giovanni Motta Serra D’Aiello, Italy
A native of Calabria in the southwestern Italian mainland, Giovanni Motta was born on March 14, 1909 in the village of Serra D’Aiello, located at the top of a rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The early twentieth century was a time of economic disaster in rural southern Italy and faced with bleak opportunities to provide for his family, Mr. Motta’s father sought an American opportunity as a coal miner in Pennsylvania. The family emigrated in 1911 finding a home site that provided enough space for a home for the family and some farm animals and a vegetable garden to help feed the family which grew to nine siblings, five boys and four girls.
Early imbued with a strong work ethic and familial responsibility, young Giovanni had his first job at the age of eight working on a neighbor’s slaughtering farm. In return for his services he was paid in animal parts, which he brought home to his mother to supplement the family meals.
Walking daily the two miles back and forth to school, often carrying his sister Maria on his back, Giovanni received his primary education in a rural two-room public school house. Driven by a deep thirst for knowledge, he graduated from high school and was the first in his family to attend college.
Without the possibility of family financial support, Giovanni, who anglicized his name to John R. Mott, worked his way not only through college but also through graduate school being awarded several Master’s degrees. Since he had to maintain full time employment to support himself and help his family, his formal educational endeavors lasted into his early thirties.
In the early days of the depression Mr. Mott found himself in Albany, New York where he was a union organizer. He was a powerful and successful man organizing several companies to have unionized workforces. An entrepreneur at heart Mr. Mott founded the “John R. Mott US Mail Transporting Company” securing a contract to transport the U. S. Mail between Albany and New York City. The company started in 1952 with a second hand tractor-trailer and Mr. Mott as the sole employee, serving as a jack-of-all-trades: driver, repairman, and loader. Through his ingenuity and hard work, the business grew steadily and expanded with additional trucks and employees. Mr. Mott was a hands-on manager of his company driving a truck himself until he was eighty-two. He continued to manage the company on a daily basis until his death at the age of eighty-nine on October 12, 1998.
Although a man of significant means, he eschewed luxury. Mr. Mott maintained an unassuming and frugal life style living in a simple room in his company warehouse. His space was sparsely furnished with a bed, a sink, and a one burner stove for cooking. He spent nothing on himself preferring to invest his resources so that at the end of his life there would be the financial basis for the “John R. Mott Scholarship Foundation”.
Mr. Mott believed deeply in the value of education. Proud of his heritage as an Italian, he wanted to establish a legacy to assist other Italians from his native Calabria and especially from the area near Serra D’Aiello, who need help in pursuing higher education.
