The Fulbright Program Features:

A single application form and general terms of award
Adherence to the Fulbright mission, program administration, eligibility criteria, and selection procedures
One academic year (8-12 months) of academic study or research
Where sufficient justification is provided, very advanced doctoral candidates and candidates in the creative and performing arts may submit requests for grants of not less than six months. Specific academic qualifications are described in Participating Countries.

NOTE: IIE also conducts, simultaneously with the competition for the Fulbright Program, competitions for various additional study-abroad programs supported by foreign governments and private donors.

Fulbright Full Grants

BENEFITS:

Round-trip transportation to the host country
Maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country
Book and research allowances *
Supplemental health and accident insurance
Tuition, in some cases
Language or orientation courses, where appropriate
Fulbright grants are payable in local currency or U.S. dollars, depending on the country of assignment.

* These grants provide only minimal funding for research. Grantees with projects that require extensive research support, materials, or equipment must obtain funding from other sources for such purposes.

Fulbright Travel Grants (Available only to Germany, Hungary, and Italy)


TRAVEL GRANTS MAY SUPPLEMENT:

An award from a non-IIE source that does not provide funds for travel
A student's own funds for study
BENEFITS:

Round-trip transportation to the country where the student will pursue studies for an academic year
Supplemental health and accident insurance
Cost of an orientation course abroad, if applicable

Fulbright Business Grants


SPECIAL FULBRIGHT BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES ARE OFFERED IN:

Germany: Three Fulbright Enterprise Scholar Awards in the fields of business, law, and international relations. They are designed to promote close cooperation with the private sector in addition to university-based research and studies.

Mexico: Eight Binational Business Grants to ehance knowledge, expertise, and understanding of post-NAFTA Mexico. These combine course work in international business or law with an internship at a Mexico-based company.

Spain: Two International MBA Grants for full-time study in a one-year program at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid, plus elective seminars and a three-month assessed internship.

Islamic Civilization Initiative

AWARDS ARE:

Designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of Islam and of Islamic history and culture as broadly defined
Awarded for research and study in any country where there is a U.S. Student Fulbright Program and a significant Muslim population
Available in most fields of study
Intended for research in historic or contemporary areas. Local sensitivities must be considered when designing research projects
Designed for proposals with a strong Islamic Studies concentration. A Middle East or Area Studies focus is not sufficient to qualify for this program
Open to all degree levels up to the Ph.D.; graduating seniors are encouraged to apply
Encouraging of language study as a supplement to research. See U.S. Student Language Enhancement Program.
Applicants must indicate under "Special Program" on Page 1 of the Application that they are applying for an Islamic Civilization Award. Those selected for awards will be expected to take part in conferences and other activities.

You must also complete and sumit the post-grant Islamic Civilization Initiative form with your application .

Fulbright Critical Language Enhancement Award

The Fulbright Critical Language Enhancement Award, sponsored by the Department of State through the Fulbright Program, is open to students who have been awarded a Fulbright U.S. student grant and intend to use one of the eligible languages in their Fulbright project. Application for a Critical Language Enhancement Award is made in conjunction with the Fulbright Program application.

The purpose of the Critical Language Enhancement Award is to cultivate language learning prior to and during the Fulbright grant period and beyond. Ultimately, critical language enhancement awardees will achieve a high level of proficiency in a targeted language and will go on to careers or further study which will incorporate the use of this and/or related languages.

In 2007-08, up to 150 Critical Language Enhancement Awards will be available for grantees to pursue in-country training for up to six months prior to beginning their Fulbright project.

The Critical Language Enhancement Award is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), designed to dramatically increase the number of Americans learning critical need foreign languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Farsi, and others through new and expanded programs from kindergarten through university and into the workforce. Foreign language skills are essential to engaging foreign governments and peoples, especially in critical world regions, to encourage reform, promote understanding and convey respect for other cultures. The NSLI initiative is a coordinated federal government effort that includes the Department of State, Department of Education, Department of Defense, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The languages available for the Critical Language Enhancement Award: Arabic, Azeri, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin only), Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Korean, Marathi, Pashto, Punjabi, Russian, Tajik, Turkish, Urdu, and Uzbek. Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs)

Opportunities to teach English language and conversation classes are available in select countries with ETA Programs. Applications for English Teaching Assistantships to countries other than those listed will not be accepted.

Specific grant details and the number of available teaching opportunities vary by country.

Applicants for English Teaching Assistantships can apply to only one country. Multi-country ETA projects will not be considered.
